INTIMACY DIRECTION
Sara works as an intimacy director, intimacy choreographer and consultant and is one of the only certified professionals (accredited through IDC, Level 4) practicing in Western, NY. Her recent work includes Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses directed by Joe Calarco, The African Company Presents Richard III, directed by Verince Miller, Sarah Ruhl’s Orlando directed by Will Pomerantz, The Seagull, Ragtime, Antony and Cleopatra and many others. Sara has been a choreographer and movement director for over 20 years in professional theatre and academia. She is mental health first aid certified for adults and youth and engages in continuous EDI, bystander intervention and allyship education and advocacy training.
“Whether I am partnering with researchers in the medical school about power dynamics in the delivery room and supporting advocacy for birthing people, or in the rehearsal room or classroom with actors and directors, I believe in helping facilitate spaces where all voices are included.
As a movement teacher, director, and choreographer, I have always been interested in how we tell stories physically. I have worked with actors from ages 8 to 80, in community, educational and professional settings. As a voice and movement teacher I have long worked with performers discovering all the gifts and challenges in their own bodies and am experienced in working with students transitioning into the bodies of their gender identities at all stages of the process.
I began my academic career working at New York Film Academy with international students -rewriting their Voice and Movement curriculum as they became accredited back in 2006. Now, many years later, at The University of Rochester’s International Theatre Program and Eastman School of Music, I am fortunate enough to work again with a culturally and internationally diverse student and faculty population.
As an MFA graduate of The Actor’s Studio in NY and producer and performer in the storefront theatre scene in Chicago- I love work that stretches us and deeply explores the human experience. With the growth in industry standards around intimacy work, I firmly believe we can tell more creative, interesting, inclusive, and intimate stories while respecting the boundaries of everyone in the space and freeing artists with a process and language in place to create brave, inventive, and physical work!”
Sara trains faculty and students in acting training institutions across Western, NY including Eastman School of Music, The University of Rochester’s International Theatre Program, UR’s Program of Dance and Movement, SUNY Brockport, Nazareth College, Rochester Institute of Technology and The National Technical Institute for the Deaf, GEVA Theatre, Blackfriars Theatre, JCC Summer Stage. She has trained music and theatre educators from throughout the country through academic conferences and theater festival workshops and training.

TESTIMONIALS
I learned so much about how to work with a cast, use my voice and project, as well as how intimacy should be choreographed and run for shows. It was a very eye-opening experience. Intimacy was most useful aspect of the production because I learned things I will use for the rest of my life.
It was just great experience to have. It really made me grow as a performer, to be put into situations where I wouldn’t have been otherwise. I will always say now that I’ve had experience with fight choreo, intimacy choreo, all with the added obstacle of a pool on stage. It pushed my limits as an actor, with the support I needed to do it and I will always appreciate (this show) for that.
Sara was phenomenal. My work with her was very beneficial to my growth in this show. She was always able to explain things to me in a clear way that I could understand, and I felt more able to connect with my partner and confident in the scenes we worked on.
My collaboration with Sara was nothing short of inspiring, and it left a lasting impression on me. Sara’s warmth, openness, and empathy were immediately evident upon our first meeting. Her dedication to the well-being of the community, including students and faculty, is exemplary. Throughout our production, Sara created a safe environment not only for the performers but for the entire company.
Thank you for what was undoubtedly the most collaborative rehearsal of my life.
Sara is consistently one of the best parts of every production I have been a part of here. She gives quality notes, positive feedback when necessary and supports actors in any way she possibly can.
Absolutely wonderful. One of the most positive aspects of this production. I felt like I was proud of my work because of how helpful she was. She helped me find bravery and joy in the work. She made herself a resource (and helped me) manage the stress of the production overall. She was a wonderful line of sanity and honesty on the production, and she held us all together. Couldn’t have done it without her.
